Gum surgery and gum implants

Gum surgery and gum implants

The Weinberg Medical Center specializes in performing surgeries and gum transplants in complex cases of severe periodontal disease. The goal is to treat diseases and prevent their deterioration. As is well known, gum disease is the main cause of tooth loss, and therefore it is important to diagnose and provide appropriate treatment as quickly as possible.

What is periodontal surgery?

Gum surgery is performed in cases of gingivitis or advanced gum disease around teeth and implants. These are common problems that affect more than 80% of the population – and if left untreated, can lead to jawbone destruction, receding gums, and loss of teeth or implants. These surgeries are performed in the clinic only after performing conservative treatments that did not help due to the severity of the condition, such as descaling, improving hygiene, root planing and more.

There are several types of surgeries that are performed in the clinic:

  • Bone-shaping surgeries such as crown lengthening and narrowing pockets.
  • Surgeries for the purposes of bone grafting and regeneration of the supporting tissues of teeth and implants.
  • Gum implants (soft tissue) for aesthetic purposes, or in case of bare gum receding.

Gum surgery in cases of implant complication

The clinic performs periodontal surgery to treat/cope with complications with failed implants (old implants with peri-implantitis, or performed poorly in another clinic).

What is the procedure of gum implantation?

Gum implantation is a local surgical procedure in which soft gum tissue is implanted to cover the tooth suffering from retraction. The missing gum tissue is usually taken from the patient's hard palate area or from an area near the retreat. However, in recent years, new techniques have been developed in this field, such as biological substitutes used as gum tissue, thus effectively avoiding taking the patient's own tissue.

When should you perform a gum transplant?

  • When there is damage to the aesthetic appearance due to withdrawal.
  • In case of sensitivities to heat or cold that impair quality of life.
  • In the case of severe gum recession that worsens over time and may cause tooth loss.
